(KNZA)--A 33-year-old Horton man tries to flee on foot when police respond to the sound of a verbal altercation at a Horton home; however, freedom was shortlived for John Moman III, who allegedly abandoned a group of young children in his attempt to run.
Horton Police Chief John Calhoon was the first to arrive at the residence, located in the 1000 block of 3rd Avenue West on Friday. “Upon my arrival, and approaching the residence, I also heard some yelling and screaming from within the residence,” Calhoon said. “After a couple minutes of listening to that, I knocked on the door and an individual opened the door who I recognized as John Dewey Moman III. He recognized me from my association as Sheriff in Atchison County and immediately slammed the door shut in my face and I could hear running.”
With the door ajar, Calhoon looked inside and saw two young children who told him Moman had fled out the back door. Calhoon called for back-up while overseeing the children. “I remained with the children. There later ended up being two other younger children in the house asleep. All the children were under the age of six. Obviously he had to be yelling and screaming at the children because there were no other adults present in the house.”
Kickapoo Tribal Police and the Brown County Sheriff's Office responded to assist Horton Police in the search for Moman, who was located and apprehended.
He now faces 4 counts of endangering a child and intereference with a law enforcement officer. He was also taken into custody in connection with outstanding warrants in Atchison County.
Moman, on parole from a past Missouri crime, was turned over to the custody of the Atchison County Sheriff.
