(KAIR)--The Atchison County Commission is moving forward with a new flood plain permit process designed to bring the county into compliance with state regulations. Last week, the commission heard a report informing them that a commission eight years ago had agreed to a flood plain management plan through the state of Kansas and FEMA in order to qualify for federal programs.
During their meeting this week, the commission agreed on a flood plain management plan for the coming year after hearing input from the Kansas Department of Agriculture. Commission Chair Jeff Schuele says that flood zone plain management maps will be approved by March, and fully implemented by September. Also, the county will be implementing a flood management permit process in order to satisfy the guidelines set forth by the state. Schuele says it will not cost residents anything to file a permit, it simply prevents construction on a flood plain.
In other business, the commission heard a report from Emergency Management Director Wes Lanter regarding the construction of the new county EMS building. Construction bids should start to go out by the end of this month, with completion slated for June of this year.
