(KNZA)--The jury trial for a Hiawatha woman charged in the March 2013 beating death of a 4-year-old boy has been pushed back.
According to a Brown County District Court spokeswoman, the trial for 28-year-old Janice Summerford, which had originally been set to begin January 21st, has been rescheduled for April 1st. Pre-trial motions in the case will now be heard January 24th.
Summerford pleaded “ not guilty” last October to charges of first-degree murder, abuse of a child, obstructing apprehension or prosecution and three counts of interference with law enforcement.
The child’s father, Lee Davis IV, of Hiawatha, is currently behind bars serving a nearly 20-year prison sentence after being convicted on an amended charge of second-degree murder and felony child abuse.
Authorities say Summerford was Davis’ live-in girlfriend and the child’s primary caregiver.
She was arrested last April following an investigation by the Brown County Sheriff’s Department.
Summerford remains in the Brown County Jail on one million dollars bond.
