(KAIR)--Now that the holidays are over, it's time to put the ornaments back into storage for another year and take down the tree, but how do you dispose of it? K-State Research and Extension Forester Charles Barden gives several Eco friendly tips to dispose of that tree. Including one that the birds in your yard will surely appreciate. He says that you can secure the tree to your back porch or deck to give birds a place to nest in. You can also provide treats by covering pine cones in peanut butter and rolling them in birdseed before placing them on the tree. For added color, you can add a sliced orange or two.
Your tree can also be broken down to help your garden and keep you warn during the cold winter months. The limbs can be broken down to provide mulch for your garden, and the trunk can be split and dried for at least a month before being used as firewood.
Finally, a used Christmas tree can be used to assist the fish in your local pond. It provides a natural home for the fish, as well as gives plants a good place to anchor onto.
If you would like to have the city of Atchison dispose of your tree, you can call the city shop at 367-5561 and schedule a pick up.
