Environment Can Affect Crime
12/30/2013

(KAIR)--With snow on the ground and the temperature consistently dipping below the zero mark, most people are staying inside to keep warm, and that does include any potential lawbreakers. Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie says that he thinks that the winter months can be a crime deterrent. With the cold weather, not many people want to go out and commit crimes.

Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson agrees, and adds that it is difficult to accurately predict when and where crime will actually occur. He says that for years they have tried to predict what time of the year and what parts of the city crime was most likely to occur, but pin maps and layouts of time lines do not necessarily explain why something happens at a certain time.

Laurie adds that the winter months are also a busy time for automobile accidents, saying that these incidents take up most of the time for officers of his department from October through March.
