(KAIR)--Bridge and road improvement in Atchison county is always a concern for County Commissioners, and with today's modern agricultural equipment, there may be some bridges out there that are unable to handle their size. A pair of county residents came before the commissioners during their meeting Tuesday afternoon to discuss bridges with low weight limits. Commission Chair Jeff Schuele says that this is nothing new. The commission has had residents come to them in the past to ask for bridge widening and other structural improvements.
Schuele adds that the commission is working on a comprehensive plan to address the issue moving forward. They have a list of all county bridges and they want to go through and see what each bridge's load limits and traffic counts are and come up with a kind of scoring matrix and criteria for replacement.
Schuele asks that county residents be patient as they work on this, as the county has 200-300 bridges that need to be inspected and possibly improved.
