(KNZA)--Concealed carry permit holders will be allowed to carry guns into the Jackson County Courthouse beginning next year.
However, guns will still be prohibited in the courtrooms on the 3rd floor of the courthouse.
$50,000 was added to the sheriff’s 2014 budget for the hiring of additional security officer to assist the current part-time officer in providing security while court is in session.
Currently, a metal detector wand is used to check those entering the courtrooms, as well as their purses and bags. That practice will continue in 2014.
State law requires cities and counties to allow concealed carry permit holders to carry guns into public buildings unless adequate security measures are in place.
The law went into effect in July, but the county sought a six-month exemption through the end of the year.
