(KAIR)--On the first day of deer hunting season in Atchison county, an elk was shot and killed just south of Atchison Wednesday night.
Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie says that Atchison County resident Mike Penning was out hunting that night, saw the animal, and just shot it. He also says that officials are wondering what the animal was doing in that particular area.
Laurie says that Penning was cited with shooting an elk without a permit, and the case has been forwarded to the Atchison County Attorney’s office.
There is a herd of elk kept at Fort Riley, but it's unknown if the animal in this case is connected.
