Raptors and waterfowl featured at 35th annual Eagle Days
Winter cold brings migrating bald eagles and waterfowl to Missouri, and both will be especially watchable at the 35th annual Eagle Days event 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7 and 8, at the Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge. The event is a partnership between the Missouri Department of Conservation, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and various public and private conservation partners.
Wild eagles on the wing and geese and ducks in the marshes are often spotted by visitors during a driving tour of the refuge’s wetlands north of St. Joseph, Mo., just off Interstate 29. Stations along the tour with be staffed by wildlife experts and offer displays or assistance with spotting scopes to view wildlife.
The Dickerson Park Zoo staff will present live eagle shows at the refuge headquarters hourly from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. These are eagles that have been injured and rehabilitated but cannot be returned to the wild. The shows offer a close view of birds of prey such as a bald eagle and a golden eagle.
