(MSC News)--Freezing rain and sleet lead to the issuance of a winter weather advisory for several local Kansas counties.
Included in the advisory, in effect now through 6:00 Friday morning, are the counties of Brown, Jefferson, Jackson, Nemaha, Marshall and Pottawatomie.
According to the National Weather Service, occassional freezing rain and sleet is likely through the late afternoon into the early evening, but is expected to taper off through the evening hours.
The wintry mix is expected to come to an end by midnight.
Residents are warned that the precipation could mean slick roadways, bridges and sidewalks, with caution being urged.
A light layer of snow and sleet was reported in the Nemaha County community of Seneca by late Thursday afternoon. Freezing rain, with frozen conditions on roadways and sidewalks, was reported around the same time in the Marshall County community of Marysville. Vehicles in impacted areas, such as Brown County, were covered in ice.
Kansas Department of Transportation trucks have been spotted on area roadways, but pretreatment is not possible due to the rain, which washes it away.
Spokeswoman Kim Qualls says crews are working a split shift, meaning they will be working overnight to keep the roadways clear.
