(KAIR)--Flooding, along with tornadoes, can be a concern for many Kansas residents. So it goes without saying that being prepared for both of these weather emergencies can save countless lives. Locally, Atchison county officials are working hand in hand with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to ensure that local flood plain maps are as up to date as possible. Commission chair Jeff Schuele says that FEMA has been changing a lot of flood plain maps, and this will effect local residents in that they have created different zones that depict different years of flood. Some zones are labeled as a ten year flood event, while one other is depicted as a 500 year flood event.
Schuele who goes on to say that county officials are working on a system continue the plan they have now concerning flood plains and the construction of new buildings in the county. Since the county does not have a zoning or permit process, they need a way to notify someone if they are building on a flood plain or not. This is important since the builder will have to obtain the proper level of insurance.
