(KAIR)--The city of Atchison is moving toward a new way to treat their water, one which will not only make water taste and smell better, but make it healthier as well. However, this new treatment process will require a redesign of the current facility.
During Monday's city commission meeting, city utilities director Mike Mathews came before the commission with a plan to make those renovations, but one that is different from the one that had been originally planned, but would increase the efficiency of the plant. The new design would also ensure that not as much open space was taken up, since most of the upgrades would use existing buildings.
Matthews also went over the additional costs this amendment would add to the total price of the upgrade, saying that the proposed amendment would add an additional $191,610 to the cost of the original authorized plan. However, 30% of the cost would be paid for by the Kansas Department of Health Environment.
The commission voted 5-0 to authorize city manager Trey cocking to sign the amendment to the original authorization to allow additional engineering services to be conducted at the facility.
