Funds Raised to Continue Hiawatha High Wrestling

(KNZA)--The Hiawatha High School wrestling program will continue next school year. That’s after $6,000 is raised—well ahead of a deadline that had been set by the Hiawatha Board of Education.

Nick Johansen and Adrian Lee, who spearheaded the fund raising efforts, presented a check to the Board of Education Monday evening for $3,925, with the majority of those funds raised through an old timer’s wrestling tournament held last month. $2,075 had previously been donated to the district for continuation of the wrestling program. The $2,000 came from the Sac and Fox Tribe.

The board gave Johansen permission in August to conduct fundraising efforts and told him he would need to raise $6,000 by February 1st of 2014 for the high school wrestling program to continue for the 2014-2015 school year.

The program was cut as part of number of budget cuts approved by the board in May due to an around $100,000 increase in the cost of insurance for the district
