Big Brothers Big Sisters is strongly encouraging ADULTS to get involved in the new program they are offering in all of their covered schools with the addition to St. Peter & Paul in Seneca. Lunch With A Little program is a very simple, flexible, and the least time consuming of all programs BBBS has rolled out.
“Many people think they don’t have time to be a Big Brother or Big Sister,” said Angela McGuire, BBBS Executive Director. “People are surprised to learn it only takes 30 to 45 minutes a week to volunteer in our Lunch With A Little program. It is a great way for busy people to make a big difference.”
The school-based program, Lunch With a Little, pairs adult volunteers at their school of choose to a student. Volunteers eat lunch with the child and if time allows helps students with homework, play games, or work on a small craft project. The “Big” and “Little” meet at the child’s school during the lunch hour. BBBS, school, and volunteers will work together to find a time that works best for the volunteer schedule. Don’t count yourself out if lunch isn’t a good time for you, call the BBBS office and we will work with you to find a time that works better in your schedule. It only requires a bit of paperwork and a quick interview to get involved.
More than ¾ of Kansas children waiting for a mentor are boys. With a great need for male volunteers, the Lunch With A Little program seeks to accommodate a working volunteer’s schedule.
BBBS has experienced substantial growth through partnerships with local businesses over the years and is so grateful for the past and current support. BBBS is encouraging business partners to continue their support Big Brothers Big Sisters and the new Lunch With Little Program by encouraging their employees to volunteer. BBBS staff is available to businesses and civic groups to come share more about this program and other programs being offered in the Nemaha & Brown Counties area.
“We are hopeful that local businesses will get involved in this new program,” said Angela McGuire. “The flexible hours of the Lunch With Little program and extending services to yet an additional school we hope will open doors for new volunteers. The impact these volunteers can make in just 30 minutes to 1 hour a week is priceless.”
