Habitat to be Built Along Missouri River
(AP) - A new shallow backwater area will be built along the Missouri River in northeast Nebraska to provide habitat for the endangered pallid sturgeon and other animals.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says a Dubuque, Iowa, company has been chosen to build the backwater area in Thurston County, Neb., on land owned by the Winnebago Tribe.
The $3.56 million contract will go to Newt Marine Service of Dubuque.
The plans call for creating 55 acres of shallow water habitat to help the pallid sturgeon and other native species.
Some clearing work is expected to begin this winter, but the bulk of the construction will take place next spring and summer. The project should be completed in the fall of 2014.
