Over 32,000 Nebraskans Expected to Fall into Health Coverage Gap
(AP) - More than 32,500 Nebraska residents will fall into a health insurance "coverage gap" next year because of the state's decision not to expand Medicaid under the federal health care law.
That's according to a report released Wednesday by the Kaiser Family Foundation. The report says more than 5 million poor, uninsured adults will fall into the gap in states that opted against expansion.
The expansion was aimed at uninsured, non-elderly adults whose incomes are too high to qualify for the current Medicaid program, but too low to receive premium tax credits under the Affordable Care Act. The report says half of that population lives in Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Ohio.
Critics argue that Nebraska's uninsured rate is lower than the nation's, and that the expansion is unaffordable.
