(KAIR)--A new rock quarry may soon be opening in Atchison county, and residents have some questions on how it would affect them.
The Atchison County Commission, along with a representative from Hamm Inc., addressed these questions to about a dozen or so residents during their meeting Tuesday afternoon. Some of the concerns brought up dealt with traffic issues, children at play, traffic flow, and how school buses would be affected.
Commission Chairman Jeff Schuele says it was a very civil discussion, as residents just wanted to know what exactly was going on. Schuele also says that there is a lot of work involved in getting all roads that have access to the quarry up to standard. This includes access roads as well as township roads that lead into the quarry. Right now, the preliminary access road is set as McPherson road, but Schuele says that this is just preliminary.
Hamm has pledge to provide the money needed to getting the roads ready for truck traffic. If all goes according to plan, the company plans to start operations at the quarry before the end of the year.
