(KNZA)--The Hiawatha School District will have to cut about $60,000 from the 2013-2014 budget due to an drop in enrollment.
That’s what the USD 415 Board of Education was told Monday evening.
The final enrollment count shows the district with a full time equivalency of 812.9 students, down 34.2 students over last school year.
Superintendent Penny Hargrove said the district is able to use either the current year’s enrollment, last year’s enrollment or a three-year average.
The district will use last year’s full-time equivalency figure of 847.1 students, which is what state aid of $3,838 per student is based on. The FTE takes into account part-time students as well.
Hargrove says she doesn’t know yet how the district will absorb the loss of funding. She said all areas will be looked at and she plans to make recommendations to the board next month.
