(KNZA)--A new, unique scam has surfaced in the local area, with Brown County Sheriff John Merchant receiving several reports of the attempt in a short period of time.
First a letter comes, then a phone call is received, trying to get the recipient to reveal personal information to prove they are not deceased.
Merchant says it's apparent the document and call aren't legitimate, and personal information should not be given. Instead,he says those who receive the call should direct the alleged scammer to call the Sheriff's department at (785) 742-7125.
Merchant calls the scam a great concern, as information provided could wipe out a victim's bank account, especially those on a fixed income.
