(MSC News)--The Kansas Silver Haired Legislature has given strong support to legalize marijuana for medical use.
The unicameral legislature voted 65-18 Wednesday in favor of the move.
That followed an address by Jack Cole, a former New Jersey undercover narcotics officer, and founder of the organization LEAP, Law Enforcement Against Prohibition.
The organization, comprised of former and current police officers, judges, prosecutors and others, opposes the war on drugs, saying they've seen first hand its ineffectiveness.
Cole's visit was arranged by Tresa McAlhaney, seeking the Kansas Libertarian party's nod to oppose Governor Sam Brownback next year.
The Silver Haired Legislature represents over 450,000 retired and elder registered voters in Kansas and works as an advisory council to the Legislature.
