Local Effects of Government Shutdown
10/01/2013

(KLZA)-- The partial government shutdown is forcing some closures in the area.

Farm Service Agencies and national parks including Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge and the Homestead National Monument of America are closed.

Squaw Creek, in Holt County, Missouri, is closed to the public and all public activities are cancelled.  Only limited function will continue, such as those necessary to respond to emergencies, perform essential functions and to protect human life or personal property.

Homestead National Monument Superintendent Mark Engler says staff preparations were already underway for a shutdown

The gates at the monument are shut and the trail system is closed.  Several school groups were scheduled to visit the monument this week for “Pioneer Day” programs, but those events have all been cancelled.  The programs typically draw more than 500 children from a dozen public and private schools, along with another 100 volunteers.
