(KNZA)--A total of one-million-dollars in public safety grants are awarded to two local Kansas Indian Tribes.
The monies are allocated by the United States Department of Justice.
The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation receives over $777,000 through the Justice Department's Office On Violence Against Women. It will be used to help decrease the incidence of violent crime against Indian women and to ensure that perpetrators of violent crimes against women are held accountable for their actions.
The Sac and Fox Nation receives over $222,000, with the grant monies made available through the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program overseen by the Office of Justice Programs.
The funds will be used to enhance tribal justice systems and support alcohol and substance abuse programs.
U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom says the funds are a tangible example of increasing efforts to support tribal communities and to build and sustain tribal justice systems.
