(KAIR)--The Atchison YMCA is getting closer and closer to having their plans for an expanded and updated facility realized.
The leadership cabinet announced Wednesday that they have received a $750,000 grant from the Mabee foundation, which brings their total for the expansion campaign to just over $5.2 million. The goal for the campaign is $6 million.
According to YMCA Director Loren Affield, the grant puts a large dent into their fund raising efforts, but there is still money out there for the organization to collect. There are still approximately six hundred fifty to seven hundred thousand dollars worth of prospects they are currently working on for the community phase, as well as several foundations. Affield is confident that the goal is very doable.
The YMCA wants to collect as much as they can for now, and then slow down a bit as the United Way starts their fund raising campaign. Affield says this is done out of respect for the United Way, as some people donate to and volunteer for both organizations. He goes on to say that money raised for this campaign will go a long way to improving the structure of the existing building, as well as providing a new, updated expansion that will go east to third Street. Some areas that are slated for updating include the lobby area, the locker rooms, and the swimming pool.
The YMCA leadership cabinet would like to thank all of the generous contributors that are helping to make the new Atchison YMCA expansion become a reality.
