( KNZA )--The Brown County Commission has adopted a 2014 budget of nearly $9.3 million that calls for an almost one mill increase in the property tax levy.
The budget was adopted Monday following a hearing drawing no public comment.
The budget contains an estimated tax rate of 37.28 mills, which is to generate nearly $4.8.
Hiawatha CPA Jim Scherer, who prepared the budget, said the county’s assessed valuation has increased about $8.2 million over the past two years, which means each mill will raise about $8,000 more.
Scherer said the amount of total taxes to be levied is up about $500,000 over the same two year period.
Commissioners said the primary reason for the mill levy increase is due to a more than $3 million decrease in the state assessed valuation placed on utilities that run through the county.
