(KNZA)--Farmers’ Market Week is currently underway, declared by Governor Sam Brownback as a way to recognize a growing sector of the state’s agriculture economy.
Providing consumers with fresh, local foods, directly from the growers, farmers’ markets are recognized for helping to keep money in local communities.
Jake Johannes is a Powhattan farmer, and is active with the farmers’ markets in Hiawatha and Horton. He says, “It’s great for the social good of our counties and our communities, but I think it’s also a really great way for families to make extra income and to keep some of that income locally. Every dollar that gets spent in Brown County gets recycled in Brown County two or three times before it leaves.”
Farmers’ Market week, which began Monday and runs through Saturday, is just one part of the overall Farmers’ Market Month, declared for August by Brownback.
The Kansas Legislature, during their last session, enacted the Farmers’ Markets Promotion Act which establishes a central registration of markets while limiting the legal liability of registered farmers’ markets.
Kansas Department of Agriculture Secretary Dale Rodman applauds the legislation, based on what he says is the important role farmers’ markets play in agricultural advocacy and rural economic growth.
