Budget Cuts Reduce Nebraska Research Dollars
(KTNC ) - Mandatory federal budget cuts are taking a deep bite out of the medical research dollars that were coming to Nebraska, according to a report from a national non-profit group.
Mary Woolley is the president of Research America. She says that if Congress continues on its present course, another 20-percent of that funding for innovative research will be lost. (play audio :17 “around the state.”)
With cuts of another 20-perecent looming, Woolley says the total medical research funding lost in Nebraska could hit 25-million dollars by October. She says the cuts will impact employment in a key area, but eventually, it’ll truly hurt us where we live. (play audio :19 “ultimately preventions.”)
Woolley says the cuts in medical research funding are striking in areas where basic laboratory studies are underway on top killers. (play audio :20 “many more.”)
With Congress in recess during August, Woolley is urging Nebraskans to contact their representatives or to attend their public events and make their voices heard.
