KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A long-stalled Missouri River project designed to provide a refuge for an endangered fish species is moving forward.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced this month that it awarded a $3.5 million contract for construction of the shallow-water habitat project at Jameson Island near the village of Arrow Rock in mid-Missouri. A six-year debate about the project had stalled similar Missouri projects. Now environmentalists hope other projects can move forward, too.
The conflict has centered on what to do with the dirt excavated to create the new habitat. Farm groups don't want the fertilizer-laden soil put into the river, saying they'll get the blame when it causes environmental problems.
But project backers say researchers have determined the soil dumping won't cause trouble.
