Crowd control, traffic congestion, and manning barricades – those are three of the many challenges the Atchison Police Department faces every year as it prepares for the Amelia Earhart Festival.
Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson says it takes forty personnel– including the entire police force and 17 cadets from the police academy in St. Joseph—to ensure the event runs smoothly.

The 17th annual Amelia Earhart Festival kicks off Thursday evening and wraps up the following Saturday night with the ever-popular “Concert in the Sky” fireworks show along the riverfront.
