(KAIR)--The Atchison County Commission met Tuesday, and, during that time, made a request to obtain ownership of the former Juvenile Correctional Facility, that sits vacant north of the Atchison City limits.
The request was made to state representative Jerry Henry, who was in attendance for the session.
The Cummings Democrat says he plans to move forward with the Commission's request, which means prefiling a bill that would transfer ownership from the state of Kansas to the county.
Nothing is yet definite, though, with the decision remaining in the hands of the state.
Henry says the Commission has not yet made a monetary offer for the property, which consists of around 160 acres of land and several buildings.
The land could possibly be auctioned off for agricultural use.
The Juvenile Justice Facility was shut down several years ago as a cost savings measure for the state, with the young inmates consolidated into other existing state facilities.
