(MSC News)--A tragic twist of events in Valley Falls Thursday night when the fireworks, planned for the city's display, reportedly ignited at once.
Jefferson County authorities confirm that the accident happened shortly after 9:30 when the fireworks somehow ignited in the container holding them, causing them to all go off at the same time, leaving several people with various injuries, including burns. At least two of the injured were transported to area hospitals for treatment, while several others apparently were treated on the scene for various injuries.
The explosion also set a nearby field on fire, with fire crews joining police and other authorities in handling the situation.
Names of the injured remain unreleased, but Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig tells the Topeka-Capital Journal one male worker from Valley Falls sustained severe burns to his arm, and a woman from Ozawkie sustained a broken arm, leading to their hospitalized treatment.
The State Fire Marshal is called in to assist with the investigation.
