(KNZA)--A unique, annual opportunity is set to happen Saturday when the Grassland Heritage Foundation hosts Prairie Appreciation Day at the Rachel Snyder Prairie, located in Jackson County near Mayetta on Saturday.
The prairie is rarely open to the public.
Prairie restoration expert Frank Norman will provide guided tours, while other family friendly activites will begin in the morning at 9:15. They include a prairie scavenger hunt, lunch, and a chance to assist with underway restoration work.
Adventurous visitors will also be able to take an unguided discovery hunt as part of the day spent on the prairie.
Snyder Prairie is located approximately 17 miles north of Topeka on Hwy. 75. To get there, take Hwy. 75 to 158th Street (just south of Mayetta) Turn east on 158th St. and go approximately 3 miles to U Rd. Turn right (south) on U Rd. and proceed another ½ mile to the gate. Parking is available along the road.
Prairie Appreciation Day Schedule:
9:15 – 11:30- Wildflower Walk and Snyder Tour with Frank Norman. A second, shorter walk will be held at 10:30 for late-comers.
9:00 – 12:00 – Discovery Hunts
12:00 – 12:30 – Lunch (provided)
12:30 - 3:00 - Restoration work with the Groundhogs (Snyder Prairie restoration volunteers)
