( KMZA )-Preliminary plans for a proposed new 34-bed jail were presented to the Nemaha County Commission Tuesday.
Sheriff Rich Vernon presented plans prepared by Treanor Architects for a 110 by 80 foot facility with a partial basement that would be connected to the existing law enforcement center.
The cost of the proposed facility was estimated at 2.5 to 3.5 million dollars.
The current 10-bed jail was built in1978.
No action was taken. The sheriff and commissioners plan to visit other jails in the area with similar floor plans to the proposed plan they are considering.
In other business, Vernon informed the commissioners that he has hired a new deputy.
David Huerter of Saint Benedict will begin work June 3rd at a starting salary of $16 per hour. Huerter retired from the Kansas State Patrol and replaces Dennis Entriken who left the department on May 21st to take a job with the Hiawatha Police Department.
Vernon also said that he has promoted Laurie Hunghans of Seneca from corrections officer to the full-time position of Jail Administrator. She will begin the new job on June 12th and will receive a $1 an hour pay raise. The position was previously a part-time position.
