( KNZA )-Memorial Day services are planned across the area Monday.
Among them are services in Hiawatha, Highland, Holton and Sabetha.
In Hiawatha, a service of remembrance to honor Brown County deceased veterans will be held at the Mt. Hope Cemetery.
The annual service is planned and presented by the Brown County Veteran’s Honor Guard. The emcee will be retired Colonel William Vonderschmidt. The speaker for this year’s service is Colonel John Andrew, Chief of Staff for the 35th Division at Ft. Leavenworth.
The services will start at 10:00 and the public is invited to attend.
If there is inclement weather, the services will be held on the first floor of the Brown County Courthouse.
In Highland, a Memorial Day Service will be held at the Highland Cemetery beginning at 10.
The special speaker will be Senior Master Sgt. Miles Gibson from Troy, who has spent 31 years of service in the U.S. military.
The service is sponsored by the Highland Pride Organization and the Highland Cemetery Association.
In case of inclement weather, the service will be in the Doniphan West High School.
In Holton, a memorial service will be held at 12 noon on the southeast corner of Holton’s Town Square. Lt. Col. Thomas Burke, finance officer with the 35th Infantry Division, will be the guest speaker.The ceremony is being held in memory of Master Sgt. Bernard “Bernie” Lee Deghand. Deghand was a member of the Kansas National Guard and was killed in action in Afghanistan on Sept. 15, 2006.
In Sabetha, The annual Sabetha Memorial Day Services, hosted by the Sabetha VFW and American Legion posts, will be held at the Sabetha and Woodlawn Cemeteries. The Sabetha service will begin at 10 o’clock followed by the Woodlawn service at 11:15.
Retired Air Force Colonel Richard Baskett, a Sabetha native who flew rescue helicopters during the Vietnam conflict, will be the speakers at both services.
In Bern, the annual Memorial Day parade will be held beginning at 11 o’clock Monday morning.
