Congress Considers Storm Shelters in Wake of Oklahoma Tornado
05/24/2013

(KTNC) - Northwest Missouri Congressman Sam Graves says the Moore, Oklahoma tornado – nearly two years to the day after a similar storm that devastated Joplin – has officials in Washington talking about putting protections in place.
Graves says the federal government is discussing how to get storm shelters installed at public schools.  (play audio   :26)
Graves says the federal government has provided funding for public schools, but has never contributed to capital improvements.  He says funding for tornado shelters would make schools safer during severe weather.  (play audio   :32)
Ten children were killed in the recent Oklahoma tornado, most of them in elementary schools that took a direct hit. Schools in Joplin also took a direct hit two years ago. Officials believe many students would have died that day if the tornado had hit when school was in session.
