Planting of this year’s sorghum crop inched forward to 29 percent complete by May 12. This was 14 percent behind last year and 7 percent behind the 5-year average. Producers in Kansas began planting during the week. However, below average temperatures continued to limit field work in the state, leaving overall progress approximately two weeks behind. State planted acre percentages as of May 12 are as follows: Arkansas – 60 percent; Kansas – 1 percent; Louisiana – 87 percent; Missouri – 5 percent; Nebraska – 2 percent; New Mexico – 2 percent; Oklahoma – 11 percent; and Texas – 66 percent.
