(KNZA)---The identity of a man killed in an industrial accident in Hiawatha early Tuesday afternoon has been released.
Hiawatha Police Chief John Defore identified the victim today as 56-year-old Ronald Lee Hastings of Bern, who was an employee of Fairview Mills.
Defore says Hastings was working at the company’s facility in the 15-hundred block of Iowa Street around a piece of machinery, commonly known as a “clump buster,” when he became entangled with it. Several other employees were working in the vicinity.
Hastings was pronounced dead at the scene.
Defore said the investigation continues, but preliminary findings are it was an industrial accident.
Fairview Mills supply's products and services to pet food manufacturers and ingredient suppliers.
Defore said large blocks of pet food are stored at the Hiawatha facility and he was told the " clump buster" is used to break up the dog food.
Emergency personnel---including the Brown County Rescue Squad, the Hiawatha Fire Department, and Town and Country EMS all rushed to the scene following the report of the accident shortly before 12:20 Tuesday afternoon.
A memorial service will be Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha.
