LV Woman Sentenced For Social Security Fraud

(KNZA)--A Leavenworth woman is sentenced to one year and one day in prison for fraudulently collecting disability benefits.

According to U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom, 38-year-old Tya Tiller committed the crimes while working federal and state jobs, and will also pay nearly 77-thousand-dollars in restitution.

Tiller pleaded guilty to one count of Social Security fraud and one count of theft of public funds.

In her plea, Tiller admitted that she claimed a disabling condition in 2003 when she successfully applied for Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits.

She continued to receive benefits while working in for the Veterans Administration from 2005 through 2007, and while she worked for the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services.

Tiller failed to report that she was working, which is required when collecting disability funds.

Tiller additionally admitted that, while working as a caseworker for the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services, she falsified information in the records of at least four individuals who were no longer eligible for food stamp benefits.

Authorities say she did that in order to use the 11-thousand-dollars in benefits for her own use.
