(KAIR) -- A major snowstorm is expected to hit the region Wednesday evening and into Thursday and area emergency management officials are reminding citizens to be prepared and stay safe.
According to the National Weather Service, Topeka office, moderate to heavy snow will begin Wednesday night and into Thursday morning with the majority of the region expecting six to 10 inches, with over 10 inches expected in northern locales, such as Brown and Nemaha Counties.
Gusts of wind up to 30 miles per hour are expected and will reduce visibility to zero at times.
However, NWS Topeka says most of the ice and mixed precipitation will remain south of I-70.
Atchison County Emergency Preparedness Director Wes Lanter says to avoid travel if possible, but plan plenty of time if you have to travel to a destination.
He also says to have a preparedness kit set for your home.
