(KNZA)--The two 22-year-old suspects, facing charges of 2nd degree murder in connection with the January 10th shooting death of Mayetta resident Kevin Stanley, remain in Iowa.
Desiree Shopteese and Lloyd Wabaunsee could refuse extradition, meaning the Jackson County Attorney would have to file for a governor's warrant to have them returned to Kansas. However, their decisions are not yet stated publicly, as they remain jailed in Iowa. Jackson County Attorney Shawna Miller says the investigation is continuing, and it's possible their charges could be upgraded.
Wabaunsee and Shopteese were located in Urbandale, Iowa by authorities, including the U.S. Marshals, hiding in the trunk of a car driven by Aaron Lofton, of Topeka. With him inside the vehicle was passenger Rachel Hudson, of Denison.
They both waived extradition, and have since been returned to Jackson County following their arrest on a warrant for obstructing apprehension or prosecution.
Miller says the pair formally faces two charges of aiding a felon, apparently arising from the alleged help they gave to Wabaunsee and Shopteese in their attempt to elude authorities.
Both Lofton and Hudson are set to appear for preliminary hearings in a Jackson County courtroom on the morning of February 7th, at 9:30.
