(KNZA)--The Horton City Treasurer has resigned.

Word of Jennifer Stevens' decision was announced during Monday evening's meeting of the Horton City Commission by City Clerk/City Administrator Candy Schmitt, who read Stevens' brief letter of resignation aloud. 

In the letter, Stevens writes that she enjoyed serving the city during her six years as Treasurer and would like the opportunity to regain the position in the future “once all issues are resolved.”  There is no clarification of what issues Stevens is referring to. 

The Commission unanimously accepted the resignation and will now begin the search for her replacement.  

The Horton City Treasurer is an appointed position, and the city will now advertise the opening.  Once interest is expressed by acceptable candidates, the Commission will review the applicants, and appoint one to fill the role during the February 4th meeting of the Horton City Commission. 

Schmitt also had good news for the Commission, in the form of a 38-thousand-478-dollar check.  That's the payment due to the city following a federal court ruling regarding atrazine contamination found in public water supplies. 

The federal ruling was handed down in October, and involved one-thousand-85 community water systems across the nation. 

The ruling stemmed from a lawsuit that had been filed by the City of Greenville, Illinois against the Syngenta company which produces a weed killer that utilizes the atrazine chemical. 

Prior to the federal ruling, the case had been pending in court for more than eight years.
