(KAIR) -- A former long-time Atchison Police Officer has been named as the new Atchison County Undersheriff.
Joe Butner was formally announced to the position by new Sheriff Jack Laurie minutes after the swearing in of county officials Monday afternoon.
Butner was a former police Lieutenant that was with the Atchison Police Department for 32 years before retiring in 2006.
The 62-year-old says he’s kept a close eye on law enforcement activity since retirement.

Butner’s replacing long-time Undersheriff Larry Myer, who actually isn’t going very far.
Sheriff Laurie says Myer will remain with the force as an Investigator, a position he was in previously before becoming Undersheriff.
