(KTNC) - Nebraska saw one of the lowest highway fatality rates on record in 2011. That trend has not continued in 2012.
In its latest report, Triple-A Nebraska says traffic deaths have risen 14-percent this year compared to the same period one year ago. As of December 27, there were 205 traffic fatalities in the state, compared with 180 in 2011.
The most significant increase, according to Triple-A has occurred on county roads in rural areas, which have seen a 51-percent increase in fatalities.
Sixty-two deaths have been reported on rural county roads this past year, compared to 41 in 2011.
Triple-A says many of those fatalities were a result of unbelted drivers or passengers being ejected from vehicles during a rollover crash.
