( KNZA )--The Brown County Sheriff’s office is implementing a new program that will allow residents to dispose of their unwanted weapons and/or ammunition.
Sheriff John Merchant told county commissioners today ( Monday ) that he has been approached by several citizens that have had weapons and/or ammunition they have wanted the sheriff’s office to dispose of.
Merchant said he checked with the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms about the process they needed to follow to legally accept the items.
He said a form will be used that the legal owner must sign, giving the sheriff’s office permission to dispose of the items.
The serial numbers will be checked to make sure the weapon isn’t stolen.
Merchant said collected items of value can to be traded to their firearm/law enforcement vendors for credit.
Officers and staff will not be allowed to take personal possession of any of the items brought in to the sheriff’s office under the program.
