( KNZA )- Brown and Doniphan County Commissioners have both agreed to provide financial assistance to Atchison-based Domestic Violence Emergency Services or DOVES.
After hearing a presentation Monday from representatives of DOVES, the Brown County Commission voted to approve a $1,000 appropriation to the non-profit organization for 2012, with the funding coming from the commissioner’s budget.
The Doniphan County Commission voted Monday to provide 15-hundred dollars to Doves.
The DOVES representatives requested financial assistance from the counties due to a cut in state and federal funding.
Tessa Carter with Doves said the organization was founded in 1987 by her mother, Sherry Dunn, and merged with the Multi-County Domestic Violence Program in 2000.
DOVES provides shelter and support for victims of domestic violence in six northeast Kansas counties-including Atchison, Brown, Doniphan, Jackson and Jefferson.
Carter said an average of 40 percent of all domestic violence and sexual assault survivors served by the organization resided in Brown County, with 16-30 survivors provided services each month.
An average of 7 percent of all survivors served resided in Doniphan County.
Last year, Carter said 50 women and 40 children stayed at their safe shelter in Atchison.
