(KNZA)--The Facebook page of a well known Hiawatha man is active with comments of shock, memories, and reflections, following his death Monday morning after the vehicle he was in collided with a train.
He's identified as 59-year-old Therman “Tee” Turner who was killed while traveling in a pick-up truck eastbound on 260th Road, just East of Jackrabbit road, northwest of Hiawatha, when the fatal crash happened at the railroad crossing just west of Kestrel Road. Also in the truck was 18-year-old Hiawatha resident Veronica Hogle, who was also killed.
Brown County Sheriff John Merchant says both were pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck, reported shortly before 10:00.
The investigation is continuing, conducted by the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Union Pacific Railroad, with assistance from the Brown County Sheriff's Department.
The Patrol report states that the pick-up failed to yield at the rail road crossing, causing it to be struck by the northbound train.
The patrol's report also states that it remains unclear who was actually driving the pick-up at the time of the crash, and it's unknown whether Turner or Hogle were wearing seat belts.
The comments on Turner's Facebook page express great respect for the man, with one poster calling him a very humble and smart guy who was close to his family and friends.
Turner was well known in the Hiawatha community, active in fund raising efforts, by rallying other motorcycle riders to join efforts to raise money for various charitable causes.
Both Turner and Hogle were taken to the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha.
