(KTNC) - The Mound City Council has decided to go ahead with a grant application to upgrade a sidewalk.
After meeting with Randy Mendenhall of Snyder and Associates, the Board of Aldermen voted to proceed with a Safe Routes to School Grant application through the Missouri Department of Transportation. The grant would provide up to 250-thousand dollars to replace sidewalks from the Mound City School at 8th and Nebraska Street, north on the east side of Nebraska Street to the south entrance of the school sports complex.
Alderwoman Kristine Gibson told the council last week that the project is the result of complaints received of people walking in the streets, kids riding bikes in the streets, and a lack of adequate sidewalks for kids walking to school.
Mendenhall estimated the cost to replace the sidewalk is $269,900. The plan is a scaled back version of the original proposal to replace the sidewalk from the school to the swimming pool parking lot. That had an estimated cost of over $317,000.
The new sidewalk would be A-D-A compliant, and there are some areas along the existing path where there are steps or trees that would have to be removed.
The grant application is due to MO-Dot by November 5th. The Safe Routes to School Grants are awarded in January, but the city likely would not receive the funds until sometime next fall, if the grant is successful.
