( KMZA )- The Northeast Kansas Suicide Prevention Committee is hosting their annual fundraising walk in Seneca on Sunday ( October 14th ).
The purpose of the walk is to reduce the stigma surrounding suicide and mental illness, to honor those who have lost their lives to suicide, and to raise needed funds for local prevention programs.
Nemaha County’s rate of suicide is nearly 25 per 100,000 compared to the state average at 13.4.
The walk, which is three miles, will start at the Nemaha County Community building in Seneca at 2 p.m.
Registration and a free will offering lunch will begin at 11 a.m.
Featured speaker Eric Hipple will speak at 1 p.m. Hipple is the outreach specialist for the University of Michigan Comprehensive Depression Center. He is a former National Football League quarterback whose 10-year career was spent with the Detroit Lions.
The event will also include a silent auction.
A memory board will be featured for those who would like to bring pictures, notes or poems to commemorate their loved ones.
Last year’s walk raised more than 13-thousand dollars and had 188 participants.
