Otoe County Man Sentenced to Prison for Swine Deaths
(KLZA) A 61-year-old man has been given 20 to 48 months in prison for letting hundreds of pigs die on his farm in southeast Nebraska's Otoe County.
John Maahs, of Unadilla, was sentenced on Tuesday. Maahs pleaded no contest in April to one count of animal neglect after prosecutors dropped nine other counts.
Authorities say deputies found hundreds of carcasses piled up in several buildings at Maahs' farm in September 2011. Most were pig carcasses. Deputies also say they found 140 live pigs and some goats and a calf alive but without food or water.
