(KNZA)--You drink, you drive, you lose.
That's the slogan for a state wide law enforcement initiative underway now through Labor Day, with local agencies-including the Hiawatha Police Department-taking part.
Police Chief John Defore says the program is executed in much the same way as the well known “Click It or Ticket” initiative(Play Audio)
The question must be asked: how does a driver not wearing a seat belt, which causes no danger to anyone else on the roadway, correspond with an anti drinking and driving campaign?(Play Audio)
Along with the focus on seat belt usage, both for adult and child passengers, Defore says his department will put a heavy focus on basic traffic law enforcement, in an effort to catch those drunk behind the wheel(Play Audio)
The Hiawatha Police Department is among one of nearly 150 law enforcement agencies spreading the message of “you drink, you drive, you lose,” funded with the KDOT grant.
It wasn't until the 2010 Legislature approved a primary seat belt law for Kansas that law enforcement could pull over a vehicle solely on the suspicion that adult drivers, and passengers, are not buckled up.
