( KNZA )-- A Prairie Hills USD 113 patron voices concerns about the district’s budget for 2012-2013.

During a public hearing on the budget Monday, Jim Scoby of rural Morrill asked the board to address why the budget increased  more than two million dollars even though enrollment has decreased and the board closed the Bern school.

Superintendent Dr. Bill Orth said when the budget was written in July it was based on a projected enrollment....( play audio )

Orth said the published budget is for budget authority and doesn’t  mean the board will expend the budgeted dollars.  He said the board must have authority to spend if needed.

Orth said the district has been given a gift of a locked in general fund budget due to consolidation....

Orth said coming out of the locked-in budget they are trying to maintain carryovers and also plan for capital expenses as they move Summerfield students to a facility in Axtell.

Following discussion, the board approved the budget as published.

Orth also provided an update on enrollment.  He said as of today ( Thursday ) they are  down 89 full-time equivalency students over last year,  with a total FTE of 1,087.5.

The first day of classes in USD 113 is today ( Thursday )

Gee, enrollment is down? Could that be because most of the Bern students have chosen to attend school elsewhere? Ha Ha, Sabetha, you may get our tax money from real estate, but you sure wont get the per student money from the state! Enjoy your victory in closing us down youve won NOTHING!

Bernlady,I am very dissappointed in your commit. I am praying for you and for those in the Bern community for the way you guys have been acting and talking. If you call yourself Christians I hope you will stop and look at how you have acting. What are you really showing your children by talking and acting this way? Christians would NOT be acting this way. I will continue to pray for you.
